Gene Clark 1948 - 2006
Most tourbillons are driven by the 3rd wheel and thus the tourbillon carriage is considered the "4th wheel" (which is why a seconds indicator is often incorporated into the carriage which while rotating, if there is a 60 division ring on the dial, it will function the same way a hand attached to a 4th wheel is used to measure seconds.)
In No. 5, however, there is a standard 4th wheel that carries the second hand and the tourbillon carriage is driven directly by the 4th wheel at a 1:1 ratio. This arrangement requires less power than normal . . . a much weaker mainspring can be used. This allows for a longer spring to be used, and therefore increased length of the spring can be used giving this watch at least a 56 hour running time while still maintaining steady amplitude. The acceleration and deceleration of the tourbillon cage, five times per second, is also more controlled.
A complicated stopping (hacking) device is employed that stops the seconds hand exactly on the second. This allows very precise synchronization of the watch to a master time signal.
Clark No. 5 was completed in 1994 at a cost of approximately 2,000 hours, in 18K pink gold case measuring 52 mm across.
The watch was sold at Sotheby's Dec. 8, 2006 Auction in New York
